What is Navy Strength Gin?
At its simplest, Navy Strength refers to gin bottled at a higher alcohol content, traditionally around 57% ABV. That’s quite a jump compared to the 40–45% we’re more used to with London Dry gins. But why so strong?
The story goes back to the days when the British Royal Navy stored barrels of gin alongside their gunpowder. If a barrel happened to leak, the spirit needed to be strong enough that the powder would still ignite. Anything weaker, and the gunpowder would be useless. The strength wasn’t just about keeping the gunpowder dry. Navy Strength gin carried flavour in a way lighter spirits simply could not. The higher alcohol content extracts and holds onto the essential oils from the botanicals, creating a gin that is more intense, aromatic, and long-lasting on the palate.
Even today, bartenders adore Navy Strength for its ability to shine in cocktails. A Negroni made with Navy Strength has an assertive backbone. A Martini becomes sharper, crisper, and more defined. It is a spirit designed not to fade into the background but to take centre stage in your glass.
A Dash of Gin History
Gin itself has a colourful past, long before the Navy got involved. It started as jenever in Holland and made its way to England with the Dutch in the 16th and 17th centuries. Soldiers returning from battle nicknamed it “Dutch courage,” and before long, London was well and truly hooked.
By the 1700s, we had the infamous Gin Craze, a period when gin was cheaper than beer and Londoners drank it by the gallon. It wasn’t all fun and games—public drunkenness and crime surged, and the government stepped in with a series of “Gin Acts” to try to rein things back under control. The Navy’s adoption of gin, however, helped to restore its reputation. Officers created drinks like the Pink Gin—a simple mix of gin and Angostura bitters to settle queasy stomachs at sea. And of course, the famous Gin & Tonic was born when quinine, a bitter anti-malarial medicine, was mixed with gin and soda to make it more palatable. These classic serves were lifesavers in more ways than one, and they cemented gin’s place in British culture.

So, what do you do with a gin as strong and bold as this? Historically, sailors drank it neat, but we live in more civilised times! Here are a few traditional and modern serves that really allow Navy Strength to show off.
Navy Strength Negroni
Equal parts Navy Strength gin, Campari and sweet vermouth. Stirred with ice and garnished with an orange twist. Simple, strong, and perfectly balanced.
The Last Word
Navy Strength gin shaken with green Chartreuse, maraschino liqueur and lime juice. It’s a cocktail that bursts with complexity and has a cult following among bartenders.
Pink Navy
A naval twist on the Pink Gin. Simply coat your glass with Angostura bitters and pour in a measure of Navy Strength gin. Add a twist of lemon, and you’re ready to sail.
The Navy Martini
Perhaps the boldest of them all. Navy Strength gin stirred with a whisper of dry vermouth, strained into a chilled martini glass, and finished with a lemon peel. Not for the faint of heart!
