The Gin Basil Smash: The Modern Classic That Took the Cocktail World by Storm

There are cocktails that have been around for centuries, surviving wars, prohibition and changing fashions. Then there are cocktails that arrive seemingly overnight and become instant classics.

The Gin Basil Smash falls firmly into the second category.

Bright green, wonderfully fragrant and bursting with fresh botanical flavour, it’s one of those drinks that makes people stop mid-sip and ask:

“Why haven’t I been drinking these for years?”

At Tack Room Distillery, we’re huge fans of cocktails that let great gin shine rather than hiding it behind sugary mixers. The Basil Smash does exactly that. It’s refreshing without being sweet, herbal without tasting like your garden, and sophisticated enough for cocktail enthusiasts while remaining incredibly easy to make at home.

But where did this vibrant green beauty come from? And why is it called a “Smash” anyway?

Let’s dive in.

Wait… What Actually Is a Smash Cocktail?

Long before basil entered the picture, there was simply the Smash.

The Smash family of cocktails dates back to the mid-1800s, appearing in legendary bartender Jerry Thomas’ How to Mix Drinks published in 1862. In those days, Smashes were simple affairs—spirit, sugar, fresh herbs (usually mint) and crushed ice. Think of them as the relaxed cousin of the Mint Julep.

Originally you could order:

  • Whiskey Smash
  • Brandy Smash
  • Gin Smash

Each followed roughly the same formula, allowing the chosen spirit to take centre stage while fresh herbs lifted the aroma.

Simple.

Elegant.

Timeless.

As cocktail fashions changed during the twentieth century, the Smash quietly disappeared from many bar menus. But, like so many classic drinks, it was destined for an impressive comeback.

The Cocktail Revival

Fast forward to the early 2000s.

Craft cocktails were booming.

Bartenders were rediscovering forgotten recipes, experimenting with fresh herbs, homemade syrups and quality spirits instead of artificial mixers.

One of the biggest influences was legendary bartender Dale DeGroff, who modernised the Whiskey Smash using fresh citrus and herbs, inspiring bartenders across the world to reinvent the style.

That inspiration eventually found its way to Germany…

…and cocktail history was made.

The Birth of the Gin Basil Smash

Unlike many classic cocktails with disputed origins, we know almost exactly when the Gin Basil Smash was born.

It was 2008.

It was Le Lion Bar de Paris in Hamburg.  The creator was bartender Jörg Meyer. https://www.diffordsguide.com/encyclopedia/1492/people/joerg-meyer

Inspired by the Whiskey Smash and a simple basil garnish he’d seen elsewhere, Meyer wondered:

“What if basil wasn’t just decoration?”

Instead of mint, he muddled generous handfuls of fresh basil with lemon juice, sugar syrup and gin.

The result was astonishing.

The basil released vibrant green oils that perfectly complemented gin’s juniper and botanical notes.

The drink looked incredible.

It smelled incredible.

Most importantly…

It tasted incredible.

Meyer originally nicknamed it Gin Pesto before wisely changing the name to the much more appealing Gin Basil Smash. After publishing the recipe online, the cocktail spread through bartending communities across Europe before becoming one of the world’s most recognised modern classics.

Why Gin and Basil Work So Well Together

Some flavour combinations simply make sense.

Tomatoes and basil.

Strawberries and cream.

Fish and chips.

Gin and basil belong on that list too.

Most premium craft gins contain botanical ingredients like:

  • Juniper
  • Coriander seed
  • Citrus peel
  • Angelica
  • Orris root

Fresh basil shares many complementary aromatic compounds with these botanicals, especially its peppery, citrusy and slightly anise-like notes.

Rather than competing with the gin, basil enhances everything that’s already there.

It’s why choosing a quality gin makes such a difference.

A bland supermarket gin gives you a decent cocktail.

A carefully distilled craft gin creates something unforgettable.

Choosing the Right Gin

At Tack Room Distillery we’re naturally biased…

…but there really is a reason our Bison Grass Gin works beautifully in a Basil Smash.

Its fresh botanical profile pairs effortlessly with basil while the subtle vanilla and grassy notes create extra layers of flavour that standard London Dry gins often lack.

If you’re making cocktails at home, always choose a gin you’d happily sip in a G&T.

If the base spirit tastes great on its own, your cocktail already has a head start.

  1. Elderflower Basil Smash

A slightly more elegant twist.

  • 10ml sugar syrup

Shake hard and serve over crystal-clear ice.

The floral elderflower softens the basil beautifully, creating a wonderfully balanced cocktail.

Pro Tips for the Perfect Basil Smash

Like many simple cocktails, success comes down to technique.

✔ Use fresh basil, never dried.

✔ Don’t pulverise the basil into mush—you’re releasing oils, not making pesto.

✔ Freshly squeezed lemon juice makes a huge difference.

✔ Double strain to remove tiny basil fragments.

✔ Use plenty of ice for a properly chilled drink.

Why the Basil Smash Became a Modern Classic

Some cocktails become fashionable for a season.

Others earn permanent places on cocktail menus around the world.

The Basil Smash belongs firmly in the second group.

Its appeal is universal:

  • Easy ingredients
  • Beautiful presentation
  • Fresh, vibrant flavour
  • Works with almost any premium gin
  • Looks fantastic on social media

Perhaps that’s why, despite being less than twenty years old, many bartenders already regard it alongside drinks like the Negroni, Daiquiri and Whiskey Sour as one of the defining cocktails of modern mixology.
